Shocking, heartbreaking, powerful, unforgettable.
This is a very hard to read book. It deals with lots of violence, child soldiers, life in a war torn country. The disparity between rich and poor, and ultimately being true to yourself, standing up for your beliefs, and the importance of friendship and family.
It deals with several young boys abducted from their school by soldiers, who use fear and brutality to force the kids to do their bidding.
The themes are mature and there is violence, but it is not overly graphic or gratuitous. Rather, this book shows the reality of life as a child soldier. The book is fictitious, but very very real.
